As
more women live longer after a breast cancer diagnosis, researchers
have begun to study breast cancer survivors' quality of life. These
important studies are looking at topics ranging from the impact of
aerobic exercise and weight training to using hypnosis to reduce hot
flashes and treatments for lymphedema.
Because new trials are getting underway all the time, your doctor may
not be aware of all of the studies currently open to breast cancer
survivors. This means that you may have to do your own research to
learn about these studies. If you find a research study
that interests you, contact the study coordinator. The coordinator will
work with you to determine if you are eligible to take part. You should
also talk to the study coordinator about what the trial will cover and
what may be required of your health insurance company. One of the best places to find information on trials for breast cancer survivors is: - Clinical Trials.gov
This clinical trials database, run by the US National Cancer Institute,
includes more than 2,000 clinical trials. In the search field, type
“breast cancer survivor.” Or call: 1-800-4-CANCER.
