Grants & Funding / Policies & Procedures scissors
The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation provides pilot grants to innovative scientists pursuing research that advances the intraductal approach. The Foundation typically provides pilot grants in the range of $10,000–$20,000. To be eligible for Foundation funding, the research must utilize the intraductal approach.

Grant proposals are presented at the Foundation's biennial symposium. The next symposium will be held March 2009, in Santa Monica, Califfornia. Funding decisions are made by a Peer Review Committee and announced at the close of the symposium.

Application Procedure
Every applicant is required to submit a pilot grant application. To be eligible for our 2009 grant cycle, the Foundation must receive your application by November 24, 2009. Your application packet must include:

  1. A one-page abstract of the proposal to be presented for funding at the conference. Abstracts must have the approval of the Principal Investigator. The text of the abstract must contain the title (bold, all caps), complete names of authors (bold, initials caps), affiliations (initial caps, unbolded), and the primary author's e-mail address, followed by the single-spaced abstract. Titles should be indicative of the content of the abstract. All words necessary to identify the subject matter should be included in the title. Periods (not dashes or other punctuation) should be used to separate two-part titles; titles must be in all capital letters and bolded. Abbreviations are not permitted. Use font "Times" and size "12". (Do not type the text of the abstract in all capitals. Do not exceed the form's margins. Place figures and tables within the text. Legends should be beneath the figures or tables.) In the text, begin single-space typing one line below the top line. Skip one line between paragraphs. Paragraphs should be flush to the left-hand margin. Abbreviations may be used in the text of the abstract if they are defined at their first mention in the text. Do not exceed one (1) page. This formatting is not optional; it must be followed.

  2. If available, one or two of your recent publications relevant to this research.

A Peer Review Panel will evaluate all submitted proposals and select those projects that it believes best fit the Foundation's funding criteria and should be presented at the symposium, based on the following criteria:

  1. Innovation and significance of research
  2. Scientific and medical merit of the proposed research plan.
Grant applicants will be notified by December 22, 2009, whether their proposal has been accepted for presentation at the symposium. Those who are accepted are required to complete an online registration form, and will be offered a reduced registration fee. The Foundation is not able to offer travel stipends; all invited grant applicants are responsible for their own travel expenses.

Invited applicants will also be asked to submit a budget and timeline for the project; NIH-format biosketches of the principal investigator; and key personnel for the project. Your abstract will appear in the symposium proceedings exactly as submitted. It is imperative that you follow the proposal text guidelines outlined above.

The Peer Review Committee will meet after the presentations have been completed to select the recipients of the pilot grants. The final selection of grant recipients will be based on:

  1. The probability of success in meeting the objective(s).
  2. The potential for the project to lead to additional funding.
The grant awards will be announced at the conclusion of the symposium. All grant recipients will be required to present their research findings at the 7th International Symposium on the Intraductal Approach to Breast Cancer in 2011.
