Foundation History Message from Dr. Love Dr. Susan Love Board of Directors & Advisors Scientific Advisory Board Our Staff Our Vision & Research Education & Advocacy
About the Foundation / Foundation History scissors
Dr. Otto W. Sartorius, a breast cancer surgeon and researcher, began the Foundation as The Santa Barbara Breast Cancer Institute in 1983. The Institute's goal was to initiate and pursue research programs and promote breast disease education.

Dr. Sartorius believed that the key to unlocking the door to discovery for breast cancer was located in research focusing on breast ducts and nipple aspiration. He became known in the 1970s as the researcher who wanted to develop a "Pap" test to detect breast cancer similar to the Pap test used to detect cervical cancer.

Dr. Sartorius passed away in December 1994. The Institute's board of directors was committed to keeping his vision alive and to expanding the scope of his work. Their search for a medical director with passion, vision, and excitement about breast cancer research, specifically research on the intraductal approach and nipple aspirate fluid, led them to Dr. Susan Love, who, in 1995, became the Institute's medical director.

Dr. Love brought with her a passion to eradicate breast cancer in her lifetime. An author, teacher, surgeon, researcher, and activist with national fame and international recognition, Dr. Love pushes for innovation, education, and excellence. In 2005, she published the fourth edition of Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, termed "the Bible for women with breast cancer" by the New York Times. In 2003, she published the second edition of Dr. Love's Menopause and Hormone Book, one of the first books to raise concerns about the widespread long-term use of hormone therapy.

Dr. Love is a founding mother and board member of the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC), was appointed by former President Clinton to the National Cancer Advisory Board, maintains a board position at the National Cancer Institute, and continues to serve as an Adjunct Professor of Surgery at UCLA.

The Institute's name was changed to The Susan Love MD Breast Cancer Research Foundation in 2000 to honor Dr. Susan Love for her visionary work and to more clearly define the Foundation and its mission. Since then, Dr. Love has expanded the Foundation nationally and increased its funding base. In 2004, the Foundation, renamed the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, moved from Santa Barbara to Pacific Palisades, in Los Angeles.
