More than 30 years of "early detection" with mammography and breast self-exam have barely dented the mortality rate for breast cancer. Currently 110 women a day die of the disease, and breast cancer incidence continues to climb; a new case is diagnosed every two minutes. By the time the cancer is diagnosed, it has already been present for six to ten years.
Women deserve better
The current breast cancer-funding establishment is focused on individual scientists and institutions competing against each other in a closed peer review process that rewards basic science research and eschews risky new approaches. Although this has led to a greater understanding of the molecular biology of the cancer cell, it has yet to translate into a cure for the disease. Clearly, the time is now for a revolutionary approach to prevention research.
The breast cancer investment portfolio must include novel organizational approaches as well as established ones if this disease is to be eradicated. We need new paradigms, new organizations, and new technologies. We need an out-of-the-box approach to cancer prevention and diagnosis. We need research that reveals the origin of the disease and new ways of treatment. We need to go beyond finding a cure. We need to stop people from ever developing the disease in the first place.
The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation is dedicated to this endeavor. We believe that we can make breast cancer a disease of the past. We know where breast cancer begins—in the breast ducts—and we now have the tools to get there. This intraductal research holds the potential to expand our knowledge in way that will truly allow us to end breast cancer. That is why it is the focus of our research and that of the researchers we fund.
